Our History
Born out of years of personal and professional frustration with the standard of care in ADHD management, Focus-MD approaches the ADHD problem head on. Parents are concerned, even fearful about asking the question 'could this be ADHD?' because they fear a rush to judgment and labeling or they've heard about expensive testing that resulted in uncertain answers.
In 1998, Dr. James Wiley was frustrated with his own family’s experience with ADHD and was feeling overwhelmed by what his personal experience was telling him about the inadequate job he was doing when taking care of these complex patients. As a result, he stopped accepting any new patients with these concerns. If he couldn’t do it well, it was better not to do it at all. By 2001, he felt prepared—through both experience and training—to reintroduce this work into his primary care practice. Unfortunately, high overhead costs and limited support resources made it challenging to spend adequate time with patients and maintain the close follow-up necessary for optimal care.
There had to be a better way. In 2008, Dr. Wiley founded Focus-MD to treat ADHD as the biological medial that science has proven it to be. Moving beyond purely behavioral or psychological models, he built the practice from the ground up by integrating professional diagnostic guidelines with the lived experiences of his patients. Much like managing diabetes, Focus-MD prioritizes medical intervention while utilizing behavioral strategies as essential supporting therapies. This personalized, medically-focused strategy has proven to be popular with patients and efficient in terms of time and cost. A network of specially trained, board-certified physicians is being developed to expand this effective care model.
